Night Trap – Sega Mega CD (1992)

Night Trap is an interactive full-motion video (FMV) horror-comedy that casts the player as a special agent for the Sega Control Attack Team (S.C.A.T.). The story follows a group of teenage girls having a slumber party at the Martin family estate, unaware that the house is infested with “Augers”—vampiric creatures seeking to drain their blood. Gameplay consists of monitoring eight surveillance cameras simultaneously and activating hidden traps to capture the Augers as they appear on screen, all while managing a fluctuating “access code” that changes throughout the game. Despite its campy, low-budget B-movie aesthetic, Night Trap became the centre of a massive moral panic in the early 1990s; it was cited in 1993 US Congressional hearings on video game violence, which ultimately led to the creation of the ESRB rating system. While critics initially found the FMV technology impressive, later reassessments often highlight its repetitive trial-and-error mechanics and grainy video quality, though it remains a definitive cult classic of the 16-bit era.
