Nintendo Game Boy Micro – Blue (2005)
Released in September 2005, the Game Boy Micro was the final hardware iteration in the iconic Game Boy line, arriving just as Nintendo was shifting its focus to the dual-screen Nintendo DS. Designed with a sleek, “image-conscious” aesthetic intended to appeal to the “iPod generation,” the Micro was remarkably tiny—roughly the size of a credit card and weighing only 80 grams. Its standout feature was a 2-inch backlit screen, which, despite being smaller than previous models, was widely considered the sharpest and brightest display Nintendo had produced to date. It also introduced interchangeable faceplates for personalization and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, addressing a major criticism of the earlier Game Boy Advance SP. Despite its premium build and pocketability, the Game Boy Micro was a commercial disappointment, selling only 2.42 million units worldwide. Its reception was hampered by a launch price that felt steep compared to the more versatile GBA SP and the more powerful DS. Furthermore, the Micro sacrificed backward compatibility, meaning it could not play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges—a move that alienated long-time fans. While it failed to meet Nintendo’s sales targets and was discontinued by 2008, the Micro has since earned cult status among retro collectors who value its unique design and exceptional screen quality as a high-water mark for 2D handheld gaming.
