The Spectrum (2024)
Released on November 22, 2024, The Spectrum by Retro Games Ltd and PLAION is a modern, full-size recreation of the iconic 1982 Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K. Designed to evoke maximum nostalgia, it faithfully replicates the original hardware’s aesthetic, including the famous “rainbow” motif and the distinctive “chiclet” rubber keyboard that defined British computing in the 1980s. Unlike the original, which relied on cassette tapes and RF-out to a television, this version features modern conveniences such as 720p HDMI output at 50/60Hz, four USB ports for controllers, and a USB-C power connection.
Technologically, the device uses software emulation to support a wide range of Spectrum models, from the original 16K/48K to the 128K and +2 models. It comes pre-loaded with 48 classic and homebrew games, including titles like Manic Miner and The Hobbit, and includes quality-of-life features like 40-second rewinds and four save slots per game. Reception has been largely positive, with critics praising the tactile feel of the rubber keys and the authentic software experience, though some noted the lack of an included controller and the “finicky” nature of the save system. Early sales indicators suggest it has been a hit among Gen-X enthusiasts, following the success of the company’s previous “mini” and full-size retro computers like the C64 and the Amiga A500 Mini.
