Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins – Nintendo Game Boy (1992)
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a 1992 platform game for the Nintendo Game Boy that marked a significant evolution for the portable series. The story begins with Mario’s jealous rival, Wario, taking over Mario’s private island, Mario Land, and his castle. To reclaim his home, Mario must travel across six unique, themed zones to collect the titular six golden coins, which are the only keys that can open the castle gate. The gameplay takes inspiration from console titles like Super Mario World, featuring a non-linear overworld map that allows players to tackle the six zones in any order. The game introduced the “Bunny Mario” power-up, which gave Mario the ability to glide, and also implemented a save feature, a first for a portable Mario title. Upon its release, the game received critical acclaim for its enhanced graphics, diverse level design, and polished gameplay, surpassing its predecessor and solidifying its place as one of the best games on the Game Boy. It also holds the distinction of being the debut of Wario, who would go on to star in his own series.
