Castlevania: The New Generation – Sega Mega Drive (1994)

In order to purchase this game, I had to sacrifice a couple of games from my collection. Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon blue on the Game Boy. My reasoning was that I do not like the Pokemon games and I know I will never play them, I will however play this Castlevania game, so the decision was an easy one to make, and with that this Castlevania game becomes the game that is worth the most in my collection.

Castlevania: The New Generation, known as Bloodlines in North America and Vampire Killer in Japan, is a 1994 side-scrolling action-platformer developed and published by Konami for the Sega Genesis. The game follows John Morris, the son of Quincey Morris from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and his friend Eric Lecarde as they battle a resurrected Elizabeth Bartley, a vampire niece of Dracula, who seeks to revive her uncle. Players can choose between John, who wields the Vampire Killer whip, or Eric, who uses a lance and magic spells.
The game features a variety of enemy types, ranging from classic Castlevania foes like zombies and skeletons to more unique creatures. Bosses are particularly challenging, requiring strategic use of both characters’ abilities to defeat. The level design incorporates both linear and non-linear elements, with hidden areas and secrets to discover.
One notable feature of the game is the ability to transform into a werewolf or a gargoyle. These transformations grant temporary power-ups, allowing players to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies more easily. However, they come at a cost, draining health over time.
The game received mixed reviews upon release, with some praising its visuals and soundtrack, while others criticized its difficulty and level design. Despite this, it remains a notable entry in the Castlevania series and a popular choice among Sega Mega Drive fans.
