Forbidden Siren – Sony Playstation 2 (2003)
Forbidden Siren (released simply as Siren in North America) is a cult-classic 2003 survival horror game for the PlayStation 2, directed by Silent Hill co-creator Keiichiro Toyama. Set in the isolated, fog-shrouded Japanese village of Hanuda, the story follows an interconnected cast of ten survivors trapped across a three-day nightmare after a dark religious ritual goes wrong, turning the town’s residents into blood-weeping, immortal undead known as Shibito. The gameplay heavily emphasizes stealth over combat, requiring players to navigate a non-linear, puzzle-like timeline where actions taken by one character directly alter the objectives of another. Its defining mechanic is “sightjacking,” a psychic ability that forces the player to stand completely still while tuning into the visual and auditory perspectives of nearby Shibito to track their patrol routes and sneak past them. Upon release, Forbidden Siren received a polarized but generally positive reception; while critics heavily praised its deeply unsettling atmosphere, innovative narrative structure, and terrifyingly unique mechanics, it was widely polarized for its extreme, unforgiving difficulty and “moon logic” puzzles that frequently required an external strategy guide to solve.
