Galoob Game Genie – Nintendo NES (1990)
The Galoob Game Genie was a popular “video game enhancer” released in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It functioned as a pass-through device, sitting between the console and the game cartridge to intercept data. By entering specific alphanumeric codes into its startup menu, players could modify a game’s memory to unlock cheats like infinite lives, invulnerability, or “mega-jumps,” and even skip difficult levels. Despite a high-profile legal battle with Nintendo, who argued the device created unauthorized derivative works, Galoob successfully defended the product in court, paving the way for the cheat-code culture of the 90s.
Because the NES was a “front-loader,” the Game Genie stuck out, preventing the console’s door from closing—though it worked perfectly fine while open.
