Nintendo Switch Online Virtual Boy (2026)

Released in February, 2026, the Virtual Boy Nintendo Classics accessory is a specialized peripheral designed to bring Nintendo’s most infamous 3D experiments to the Switch and Switch 2. is a plastic replica that mirrors the original 1995 hardware’s tabletop tripod design, and functions by housing the Switch console behind stereoscopic lenses, allowing players to experience the Virtual Boy’s unique depth effects. While the launch lineup includes staples like Virtual Boy Wario Land and Mario’s Tennis, the 2026 revival also features modern quality-of-life updates, such as the ability to swap the classic eye-straining red-and-black palette for more comfortable green or grey “Game Boy” colour modes.
The reception for the accessory has been a mix of nostalgic fascination and familiar frustration. While critics have praised the technical preservation of the library—which even includes previously unreleased titles like Zero Racers—many have noted that the “authentic” design remains ergonomically challenging, often requiring players to hunch over a table to play. Despite these physical discomforts, the peripheral has proven to be a surprise commercial hit among collectors, with the premium model selling out across major retailers shortly after its debut. While it is unlikely to reach the mass-market numbers of the Switch’s primary lineup, the accessory has already outperformed the original 1995 console’s lifetime sales of roughly 770,000 units, cementing it as a successful, albeit niche, tribute to Nintendo’s history.

This is what the new Virtual Boy accessory (Right) looks like compared to the original console (Left). As you can see it is a very faithful recreation of the original. I haven’t been able to use this yet as Nintendo have locked this behind the second tier of their online service which I have not signed up for yet.
