The Plucky Squire is a charming 2024 action-adventure platformer that centres on Jot, the hero of a children’s storybook, whose world is turned upside down when the villainous Humgrump realizes he’s trapped in a losing narrative and kicks Jot out of the pages. The core gameplay revolves around Jot’s unique ability to jump between the 2D, hand-drawn world inside the book and the 3D, real-world environment of a child’s desk. This dimension-hopping mechanic is used to solve creative puzzles—often involving manipulating the actual text within the book to change the world—and engage in simple, Zelda-like sword combat against foes. The adventure is frequently spiced up with a delightful variety of distinct mini-games, from boxing badgers to jetpack sequences. Upon its release for the Nintendo Switch (among other platforms), the game was met with generally favourable reception from critics, who highly praised its inventive art direction, unique 2D-to-3D mechanic, and sheer creativity, though some noted the game’s lack of difficulty and inconsistent pacing as minor drawbacks.
