The PS5 game Alone in the Dark is a survival horror title that reimagines the 1992 original, considered a pioneer of the genre. The story, set in the 1920s American South, follows either private investigator Edward Carnby or his client, Emily Hartwood, as they travel to Derceto Manor, a home for the mentally ill, to find Emily’s missing uncle. The narrative, written by SOMA and Amnesia writer Mikael Hedberg, blends psychological horror with a Southern Gothic atmosphere, as the duo’s search leads them into a nightmarish, Lovecraftian mystery where the lines between reality and delusion blur. Gameplay focuses on exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat from an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective. Players navigate the sprawling Derceto Manor, solving environmental puzzles, finding keys, and gathering collectibles, known as “lagniappes,” to unravel the mystery. Combat is limited, with players having access to firearms and melee weapons that break easily, emphasizing the survival aspect. The game’s reception has been mixed. Critics and players often praised the intriguing story, strong atmosphere, and challenging puzzles, but many also criticized the clunky and “janky” combat, rigid controls, and performance issues. Despite its shortcomings, many fans of classic survival horror found it to be a faithful and enjoyable reimagining that honoured the series’ roots.
