Dr. Mario – Nintendo Game Boy (1990)
In Dr. Mario for the Nintendo Game Boy, Mario takes on the role of a doctor attempting to eradicate viruses from a medicine bottle. The gameplay involves strategically dropping and rotating two-coloured capsules to create lines of four or more matching colours with the viruses, causing them to disappear. There isn’t a deep narrative, but the objective is to clear all the viruses in each level to progress, with increasing speed and virus count as the difficulty rises. The Game Boy version, while in black and white, was generally well-received as an addictive and enjoyable puzzle game, often compared favourably to Tetris despite some criticism regarding its similarities and the lack of colour potentially making it slightly harder to distinguish elements.
