NubyTech Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller (2005)

The Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Controller, manufactured by NubyTech, was released in 2005 to coincide with the launch of the iconic survival horror game. Two distinct versions were produced: a yellow model for the Nintendo GameCube and a blood-red variant for the PlayStation 2. The design is famously macabre, featuring a detailed chainsaw body with a “blood-splattered” blade and a pull-cord that functions as the Start button on the PS2 version. While the GameCube version came in a windowed cardboard box, the PS2 version was often packaged in a premium display case, reinforcing its status as a collector’s item rather than a practical peripheral. In terms of reception, the controller is widely regarded as a masterpiece of aesthetic design but a nightmare of ergonomics. Critics at the time praised its unique presentation and the authentic “splatter” patterns—which were unique to every individual unit—but noted that the button placement was incredibly cumbersome for actual gameplay. Despite being limited to approximately 50,000 units per console, sales were driven primarily by the “niche collector” market rather than mainstream gamers. Today, it remains one of the most sought-after oddities in gaming history, with well-preserved units often fetching hundreds of pounds on the second-hand market.
