Mario Party 5 – Nintendo Gamecube (2003) (Japanese)
Mario Party 5 is centred around a “dream” theme, taking place in the Dream Depot where the Star Guards from Paper Mario task Mario and friends with protecting everyone’s dreams. In the single-player Story Mode, players must defend these dreams by defeating the Koopa Kid Brigade and eventually Bowser across seven themed boards. The gameplay retains the classic formula of moving across a board to collect Stars, but it notably introduced the Capsule System—replacing traditional item shops with randomized capsules that players can use on themselves or throw onto spaces to create traps. It also added several new diversions, including the Super Duel Mode, where players build and battle custom vehicles, and sports-themed bonus games like ice hockey and volleyball. Upon release, the game received mixed to positive reviews; while critics praised the high quality of the 70+ new minigames and the transition to fully 3D game boards, some felt the series was becoming repetitive and criticized the heavy reliance on luck introduced by the new capsule mechanics.
