V- Rally: Edition 99 – Nintendo 64 (1998)

V-Rally: Edition ’99 on the Nintendo 64 is a rally racing game developed by Eden Studios and published by Infogrames. It was a port of the original PlayStation game. The game does not contain a story mode; instead, players can choose from a few different gameplay modes: Arcade, Championship, and Time Trial. In Arcade mode, you race against AI opponents in a series of stages with checkpoints. The Championship mode is more like a traditional rally event, where you compete for the best cumulative time across multiple stages, and you are the only car on the track. Players can choose from a selection of 11 officially licensed World Rally Championship cars and race on over 40 tracks located in 8 worldwide locations, including countries like England, Spain, and Indonesia.
The reception for the Nintendo 64 version was mixed. While it was praised for its amount of content, including a wide variety of cars and tracks, and for its attempt at realistic physics, many reviewers criticized the game’s controls and graphics. The controls were often described as too sensitive, making the cars prone to sliding and spinning out. The graphics were noted for significant pop-in, where parts of the track and scenery would suddenly appear as you approached them, which made it difficult to see upcoming turns. This, combined with a co-driver who was sometimes inaccurate, often led to frustration for players.
